Alexandra Marie Nychka, 78, of Astoria, NY and Port Charlotte, FL passed away on May 30, 2025. She was born in Austria on July 4, 1946 to the late Alexander & Sophia Sokolyshyn, who fled their native Ukraine during WWII. She immigrated to the United States in 1949, settling in Manhattan’s East Village. She was a graduate of St. George Elementary School, Julia Richman High School and Hunter College. In 1974, she moved with her husband and children to Florida, where she became an active member of the Ukrainian community in North Port. She loved the hustle and bustle of NYC, the warmth of Florida, the color red, Ukrainian culture, and her family. She is predeceased by her son, Damian Nychka. She is survived by her husband, Bohdan Nychka, and her 3 children and 9 grandchildren:
-Ariadna (Oleh) Holynskyj and children Alexa, Sophia, Julian and Markian
-Andrew (Renata) Nychka and children Markian, Mykola and Melania
-Diana (Jeremy)Traska and children Sophia and Claudia
A private Mass will take place at St George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on Thursday, June 5, 2025 at 9:30am. Burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to St Jude Children’s Hospital.
