Julian Baczynsky passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 10th, 2021.
Julian was born in Ukraine on June 30th, 1923 son of Lidia and Evstachie Baczynsky.
On December 12th 1949, he along with his family came to the shores of the United States.
In May of 1962, he married his wife Maria with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
Upon his arrival to the United States, Mr. Baczynsky held jobs in various areas until he was
able to purchase and develop a successful business. The East Village Meat Market became
a well known Lower Eastside establishment and landmark, frequented by not only Ukrainians
but by many New Yorkers. Mr. Baczynsky’s success allowed him to contribute generously to
many cultural and social organizations in the United States, Ukraine, and Brazil. He supported
an orphanage in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, by sending medical supplies, clothing for the children and
funding for the construction of additional facilities. Since religion played a significant role in his life,
Mr Baczynsky donated generously to churches in the Ukrainian diaspora.
In June of 1996, Julian Baczynsky was named to the Knights of Columbus by Pope John
Paul II. He also received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his humanitarian aid in August 2009.
Julian Baczynsky leaves behind a grieving wife, family, friends as well as a whole community.
