Maria Baczynsky passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 4, 2021.
Maria Baczynsky was born on March 12th, 1925 in Verchovyna, Ukraine, a village in the Carpathian mountains. She immigrated to London, England, where she lived for five years. In 1955, Maria relocated to the United States where she met Julian Baczynsky. Julian and Maria were married in May of 1962 and shared 59 years of marriage. Maria was predeceased by her husband.
Along with her husband, Maria helped co-found the East Village Meat Market, a thriving business and landmark in the East Village. She worked tirelessly to help create this successful Ukrainian establishment.
Maria Baczynsky was a parishioner of St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church in Manhattan. She was a devout Catholic and religion played a significant role in her everyday life. She practiced her faith by attending services on a regular basis and exhibited Christian practices in her daily life. The Baczynsky's contributed generously to the needs of their parish and to the many other parishes in the Ukrainian diaspora.
The Baczynsky's generosity extended to other Ukrainian social and cultural institutions. For many years, Maria and Julian were benefactors of an orphanage in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. They did so by sending medical supplies, clothing for the children and funding for the construction of additional facilities at the orphanage.
Maria will be missed by her grieving family and friends and the entire Ukrainian community.
Viewing will take place at St. George Church on Sunday July 11th from 5-8pm with services starting at 6:30pm. Funeral Mass on Monday July 12th starting at 12pm at St. George Church. Burial at St. Andrews Cemetery to follow.
