Roman Sachko, the youngest son of Ivan Sachko and Maria Shumeyko was born on January 30, 1928 in Hlibichin, Ukraine. His brother Andrij, born in 1925, joined the UPA (Ukrainian Partisans Army) and died in action- date unknown.
During the Nazi/Soviet conflict, Roman fled Ukraine to Grassau, Germany, where he was welcomed by the family of Franz Baumgartner and worked on their family farm from 1944-1951. After leaving Germany in 1951 Roman arrived in New York City and shortly afterwards was introduced to his future wife, Ivanka Cisyk, by Stephanie Czerepanyn. Roman and Ivanka were in the wedding party at the marriage of Stephanie and Wasyl Czerapanyn on September 20, 1959 and Roman is the proud godfather to Stephanie and Wasyl's daughter, Lesia.
A little over a year later on October 8, 1960- Roman and Ivanka were married.
In 1961 Roman and Ivanka were blessed with the birth of their first daughter, Christine and three years later in 1964 the second daughter, Roma, was born
Funeral Mass for Roman Sachko will be held at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church on Monday March 28th, 2022 at 10:30am with burial at Gate of Heaven to follow.
