Obituary

Stanislawa Sulkowska, lovingly known as Anna and Stenia, was born on January 14, 1925, in Branica, Poland. She lived in Poland throughout WW2. Stanislawa earned a masters in economics, began a career at a firm and later married Alfred Siuzko. Together, they raised two daughters, Bozena and Barbara. After the loss of Alfred, Stanislawa emigrated from Poland to Germany and in 1973, Stanislawa and her daughters moved to New York City, beginning a new life filled with hard work and determination. The East Village quickly became her home, and over the years she became a familiar and respected presence in the neighborhood’s restaurant and bar scene. In the 70’s, she first opened a candy store at the corner of 7th Street and 1st Avenue, followed by ownership of The Baltyk on 1st Avenue and 1st Street.

In 1982, Stanislawa opened Downtown Beirut on First Avenue, praised by The Village Voice for having the “best jukebox in town.” She later expanded with Downtown Beirut II on Houston Street in 1987. She then opened Kaprys catering hall in Ozone Park. In the 1990’s she opened Oasis Lounge on St. Mark’s Place, just off Avenue A. These businesses were built and run by Stanislawa while she was well into her 50s, 60s, 70s— a reflection of her tireless work ethic and unwavering belief in herself. Her businesses were a big part of her identity.

More importantly, she was a devoted mother and grandmother, and nothing brought her greater joy than her family. She is survived by her daughters Bozena and Barbara; her grandchildren John, Robert, Diana, Kim, Daniel and her beloved four-year-old great-granddaughter, Kaylee, who brought her endless happiness. Holidays and birthdays were traditions and always spent together.

Stanislawa was also a life long dog lover. From Misiu and Puszek in the 80s to the family dogs more recently— Pugsly, Chico, Benny, Winnie, Charlie, Kali, Leo, and Nimo — brought her so much happiness, and their photos always had a place in her bedroom.

Stanislawa found joy in simple things — visiting local restaurants, being at home with her family, and watching her favorite shows on TV Land, including Gomer Pyle, Bonanza, Three’s Company, I Love Lucy, and most loved, The Andy Griffith Show. She frequented Florida during the winter months and had traveled to Poland to visit family and friends. She never stopped learning or staying engaged with the world. In her 90’s she mastered her laptop, kept up with the news, checked her horoscope daily, and remained curious and sharp.

Stanislawa will be remembered for her strength and determination, and for the simple truth she shared so often with our family: “life is beautiful.” She was a woman of deep faith who trusted in God. She passed peacefully at 100 years old surrounded by those she loved most. And we take comfort in knowing she has been welcomed into eternal rest, reunited with loved ones, and embraced in God’s loving arms. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy of love, resilience, and devotion will live on forever in our family and in our hearts.
